PDF is an abbreviation for Portable Document Format. It was developed by Adobe in the early 1990’s to be a standard file format across all operating systems. The PDF file format allows people to view and print documents irrespective of the device, software or operating system they use. PDF documents retain the original document formatting so they look the same on any device.

PDF files can be opened with programs like Adobe Acrobat Reader which is available for free from Adobe. Most modern web browsers will also open PDF files directly.
