What is Responsive Website Design?

The term responsive website design is used a lot nowadays by website designers and developers. Many existing and prospective website owners however, are unaware of what this means and the how important it is for a website to be responsive.

In responsive design, the content scales and arranges itself automatically to suit the screen size it is viewed on. This can range from wide screen monitors, desktops, laptops, tablets and phones. It is not enough to have a site designed for only one screen size.

Unfortunately there are still many websites that are not responsive and require old fashioned resizing, scrolling and zooming. This makes them difficult to navigate and user unfriendly.

Why is Responsive Design Important?

Google’s search algorithms use mobile friendliness as a ranking factor. This means that sites that are not mobile friendly will rank lower on search engine result pages. By using responsive design your website will be mobile friendly and rank higher.

User experience is crucial if you want people to like your site and convince them to return. Research shows that the number of mobile website users is increasing. This means that you need your site to be responsive and mobile friendly.

Responsive and mobile friendly website design means that your website will look great on any device, be easy to navigate and retain all of it’s functionality on any screen size.

It is no longer necessary to have different designs as responsive design uses the same HTML code for all devices and screen sizes. This means updating a site becomes lot easier. CSS media queries and breakpoints make it possible for the appearance to change for the device it is viewed on.
