A Pantone colour refers to one of the more than 2000 colours in the Pantone Matching System (PMS). The Pantone Matching System organises colours in a logical sequence with unique identification numbers and the formulas needed to reproduce them.

The Pantone Matching System was developed by the American company Pantone LLC in the 1960’s. The first colour guide contained 500 colours. Today the Pantone guide contains over 2000 solid spot colours for printing inks, each with a specific number for identification and a suffix (C for coated and U for uncoated) indicating the paper type.
