WooCommerce is a free e-commerce plugin that turns any normal WordPress website into a fully functioning online store. Like WordPress, WooCommerce is open-source, so you are free to change or add core features, build new extensions and create new themes.
WooCommerce was first launched in 2011 by a theme developer called WooThemes. It was then acquired by Automattic the parent company of WordPress in 2015 who continue to develop and maintain the plugin.
